Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan
Term: May 13, 1962-May 13, 1967
He was chosen to be Vice President of the Republic of India in 1952 & head of the state in 1962. During his term, two serving PMs died-Jawaharlal Nehru(1964) & Lal Bahadur Shastri(1966); & India engaged in wars with China(1962) & Pakistan(1965). His birthday, Sept 5, is celebrated as Teachers’ Day.

Dr Zakir Husain
Term: May 13, 1967-May 3, 1969
The first Muslim President of India , Dr Zakir Husain founded the Jamia Millia in 1920 and worked as the Vice-Chancellor of the institution for nearly 3 decades. He was Vice-President of India from 1962 to 1967. Dr Hussain died on May 3, 1969 while still in office.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri
Term: (May 3, 1969-July 20, 1969 and Aug 24, 1969-Aug 24, 1974)
A freedom fighter, a statesman and a prolific writer, V V Giri served as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore. He became Acting President of India in 1969 during the Congress term in government after the death of Dr Zakir Husain. He later contested the post and won.

Dr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed
Term: August 24, 1974-February 11, 1977
Chosen for presidency by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1974, Dr Ahmed became the second Muslim to be elected to the post. He later used his constitutional authority as head of state to issue the proclamation of emergency in 1975. He died while in office.

Neelam Sanjiva Reddy

In 1969, Indira Gandhi put up VV Giri against him for the top post asking for a ‘conscience vote’. Giri won. Year 1977 saw Congress losing to Janata Party, with Reddy winning a seat on a Janata Party ticket. The same year, Reddy, 64, was elected unopposed, making him India’s youngest-ever President

An Indira Gandhi loyalist, Giani Zail Singh was the first and only Sikh President of India. His term spanned Operation Bluestar in 1984. The same year, Indira Gandhi was assassinated and the anti-Sikh riots took place in Delhi.

Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma held a doctorate in law. He was promoted from vice-president to president.

The first Dalit to be elected president, KR Narayanan was nominated by the Congress-backed United Front government. In the 1998 general elections, he became the first Indian President to join citizens at a polling booth to cast his vote in an unprecedented move.

Dr A P J Abdul Kalam
Term: July 25, 2002-July 25, 2007
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, India’s ‘People’s President’ & ‘Missile Man’, played a pivotal role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear test in 1998, the first since the original N-test by India (1974). Dr Kalam was fielded as a presidential candidate by the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Dr Kalam’s candidature re-ignited the debate over whether an apolitical person can make a better president. His candidature was opposed by Left parties but his victory was widely predicted after support from the ruling coalition & main opposition. He won the elections by an overwhelming majority.

Pratibha Devisingh Patil
Term: July 25, 2007-till date
She created history by becoming the first woman to hold the office. In 2007, she was the surprise pick of the UPA-Left-BSP alliance for the post after communists vetoed their choice of Shivraj Patil. Her loyalty to the Nehru-Gandhi family was widely perceived to be a major factor in her nomination.
She was Rajasthan Governor before setting up base in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Controversies during her term include foreign trips that rung up bills of Rs 205 cr & a post-retirement home on 5 acres of defence-owned land in Pune. ‘Hurt’ by the controversy, President Patil decided to surrender the land.

Pranab Mukherjee has crossed the half-way mark in the presidential poll against PA Sangma. He will become India’s 13th President. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on July 25.
