iBrain Translates Brain Activity to Word

iBrain Translates Brain Activity to Word

Stephen Hawking is helping to trial a new device that could allow him to communicate by reading his brain activity alone.

The iBrain, which received the 2010 award for the Most Innovative New Product, is able to record brain activity from a single point on the scalp, with useful information about the activity extracted by an algorithm. In preliminary trials, Hawking was asked to imagine moving his hands or feet, and the team was able to identify which movement he was thinking of based on the changes in his brain activity.

The next step will be to develop the technology to the point that will allow people to use imagined movements to instruct a computer to speak words or write. iBrain Translates Brain Activity to Word
